Father of Shooting Victim Reacts to Early Release of Accomplice

Tim Edwards, the father of Elle Edwards, has expressed his dismay after learning that Thomas Waring, who aided her killer, will be eligible for early release in October. Elle Edwards was shot by Connor Chapman outside the Lighthouse pub in Wallasey Village on Christmas Eve 2022.

Waring was sentenced to nine years in July 2023 for possessing a prohibited weapon and assisting an offender. Edwards criticized the early release scheme, stating that it feels like a significant injustice to victims' families. He noted that he had reached out to Andy Burnham regarding the criteria for early release but received no response.

The early release initiative was introduced to alleviate prison overcrowding in England and Wales. While certain serious offenders, including those convicted of rape and child sex offenses, have been excluded from this scheme, Edwards highlighted the lack of consideration for victims' families in these decisions. He raised concerns about the potential for Waring to reoffend, given that the weapon used in the murder remains unfound.
