Fernando Aguerre Begins 10th Term as ISA President

The International Surfing Association (ISA) has re-elected Fernando Aguerre as President during its annual general meeting this week, marking his 10th term in office. Aguerre, who has been in this position since 1994, has played a crucial role in bringing surfing to the Olympics.

Aguerre expressed gratitude for the support he received from the surfing community, allowing him to serve another four years. His leadership will oversee the sport's participation in the Tokyo 2021, Paris 2024, and Los Angeles 2028 Summer Games.

This year, the ISA has been focused on qualifying surfers for the 2028 Olympics, implementing changes to the qualification process that have faced criticism from Championship Tour athletes and WSL CEO Ryan Crosby. In response to the backlash, the ISA revised its guidelines, aiming to balance the representation of top surfers with the principle of universality.

As the ISA prepares for the upcoming Olympic events, Aguerre is also addressing tensions with the World Surf League, which could impact the sport's future in the Olympics. He emphasized the importance of surfing's role in promoting environmental awareness and its contributions to the Olympic movement.
