Fernando Alonso Supports IndyCar's Barcelona Race While Cautioning Against Global Expansion
Fernando Alonso, a two-time Formula 1 world champion, has expressed his support for IndyCar's decision to hold a race in Barcelona in 2027. This event, scheduled for July 16-18, will take place at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and marks IndyCar's first European race since 2007.
The agreement, described as a 10-year deal, is significant for the series as it also provides a home race for Spanish driver Alex Palou. Alonso emphasized the importance of permanent circuits for the development of motorsport in Spain, noting that they allow for year-round testing and hosting various racing events.
Despite his support, Alonso cautioned against IndyCar's potential global expansion, referencing the high costs associated with international travel in Formula 1. He suggested that while having one or two races outside the US could be beneficial, maintaining a focus on the domestic market is essential for the series.
