Fernando Mendoza Makes NFL Debut for Raiders in Loss to Patriots
The Las Vegas Raiders introduced rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza during Week 5, as he took over for Kirk Cousins late in a game against the New England Patriots.
Mendoza, selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, entered the game with the Raiders trailing 45-17 and just over six minutes remaining. Cousins was not injured, and the decision to bench him was made to avoid risking injury with the game already out of reach. The Raiders' management has indicated that they prefer Cousins to play most of the season to aid Mendoza's development.
In his debut, Mendoza completed 6 of 8 passes for 48 yards, showcasing some of the skills that made him a top prospect. His most notable play was a 16-yard completion to Tre Tucker. Despite the loss, Mendoza's performance offered a glimpse of potential for the future as the Raiders face challenges ahead, including an upcoming game against the Buffalo Bills.
