Fernando Mendoza May Start Season as Raiders' Third-String Quarterback
Fernando Mendoza, the first overall pick, is likely to start the upcoming season as the third-string quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders. Initially expected to compete for the starting position, his role may change based on recent team decisions.
Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak mentioned that Aidan O'Connell is being considered as the backup to Kirk Cousins, which could push Mendoza down the depth chart. Kubiak acknowledged that the team faces tough choices regarding the quarterback lineup, suggesting that all three quarterbacks are prepared to step in if necessary.
Mendoza began the preseason as the Raiders' second-string quarterback, with O'Connell behind him. Although both players performed adequately, Mendoza had some moments he would prefer to forget. The organization aims to gradually acclimate Mendoza to the NFL, making it surprising if he does not secure the No. 2 spot.
