Ferrari Improves Engine Performance but Mercedes Maintains Edge

Ferrari's latest engine upgrade has led to improved drivability and a reduced performance gap, although Mercedes continues to hold an advantage, especially on the straights at Monza.

During Friday's practice sessions, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton initially led, but George Russell later edged ahead in the second session. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli acknowledged Ferrari's progress with the new engine, anticipating a competitive battle for pole position.

Hamilton noted that Ferrari's main shortfall is still on the straights, estimating a loss of approximately six tenths of a second to Russell in that area. However, he expressed optimism regarding the upgraded engine's performance in slower sections of the track. Team principal Vasseur highlighted the potential impact of slipstreaming on qualifying, estimating that a tow could provide a significant time advantage.
