Ferrari's Power Unit Upgrade Fails to Close Gap with Mercedes

Ferrari's second power unit upgrade did not succeed in narrowing the performance gap with Mercedes, as confirmed by team principal Fred Vasseur. He stated that the Scuderia was not expected to match Mercedes' engine power by 2026.

The Mercedes engine has been the most powerful since the introduction of new technical regulations, while Ferrari's upgrades, which were introduced in Austria and Monza, have not delivered the anticipated improvements. During qualifying, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton placed fourth and fifth, respectively, but Leclerc's race ended prematurely due to a collision with his teammate.

Vasseur acknowledged that Ferrari's upgrades were not transformative and highlighted the difficulties of engine development within the constraints of a cost cap. He noted that while small improvements are being made, significant gaps remain, particularly in terms of pure power. The recent performance has resulted in an increased deficit in the constructors' championship, with Ferrari now trailing Mercedes by 122 points.
