
FIA Defends Use of Power Unit Algorithms in Formula 1
The FIA has responded to calls for banning power unit algorithms in Formula 1, stating that such a move could exacerbate existing issues. Nikolas Tombazis, the FIA's single-seater director, noted that the complexity of F1's power units makes it challenging for drivers to manage energy deployment effectively.
During a recent event at Spa-Francorchamps, driver Oscar Piastri expressed frustration over unexpected performance variations from his power unit, which he felt hindered fair competition. Team principal Andrea Stella explained that both Piastri's and Lando Norris's cars had similar settings, pointing to the self-learning algorithms that adjust energy management during races.
Tombazis acknowledged the drivers' concerns but argued that banning these algorithms would lead to more significant problems, such as increased clipping and less effective energy management. He emphasized that while the upcoming regulations aim to enhance driver control, the inherent complexities of the current systems make complete autonomy unrealistic.
