FIA Director Discusses Future of Formula 1 Manufacturers

Nikolas Tombazis, the FIA Single Seaters Director, stated that without the current Technical Regulations, only Ferrari and Mercedes would remain in Formula 1 starting in 2026. He expressed confidence that manufacturers like Audi, Ford, GM, and Honda would not have entered the sport without a shift towards electrification.

Tombazis acknowledged that drivers have voiced dissatisfaction with the new regulations, noting that their feedback was anticipated. He admitted that discussions regarding future regulations should have begun earlier to avoid current complaints. The aim of achieving a near 50-50 power split in Power Units has proven challenging.

Despite the drivers' concerns, Tombazis clarified that the regulations were agreed upon by the current manufacturers and Porsche, who has since withdrawn. He emphasized that without these regulations, the sport would likely have only two Power Unit suppliers, which could pose significant issues for Formula 1.
