FIA President Suggests China's Role in Future F1 Expansion

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has stated that if Formula 1 considers expanding beyond its current 11 teams, it should look to China for a potential 12th team.

While Cadillac's entry has resolved one aspect of team expansion, Ben Sulayem believes that a significant Chinese manufacturer is necessary for the next step. He has engaged in discussions with BYD and Geely, noting that BYD expressed interest in forming its own team rather than acquiring an existing one.

Ben Sulayem has requested that BYD return with a serious proposal before the FIA contemplates initiating a formal process for a new team. This stance contrasts with Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali's recent comments suggesting that the championship does not require additional entrants in the near future. Currently, BYD and Geely are still in the discussion phase, and a detailed proposal would be needed to advance the conversation.
