FIDE Ratings Update: August 2026

In the latest FIDE ratings for August 2026, Magnus Carlsen continues to hold the position of world number one in chess. The top five players maintained their rankings as most were inactive in July, with Nodirbek Abdusattorov being one of the few to compete at the Quantbox Chennai Masters.

Abdusattorov finished with a score of 3½ points, resulting in a slight drop of two places despite losing only four rating points. Wesley So and Anish Giri each moved up one position. Meanwhile, Arjun Erigaisi and Alireza Firouzja gained points at the Chennai tournament, with Firouzja climbing back into the top ten after gaining eight Elo points.

Gukesh Dommaraju, the reigning world champion, had a disappointing performance, finishing last and losing 14 rating points, which dropped him to 31st in the world. Ian Nepomniachtchi also faced a setback, finishing 25th at the Open International d'Aix-en-Provence and losing 16 points. In the women's rankings, Hou Yifan remains the highest-rated player, with no changes in the top nine. Notable gains were made by Polina Shuvalova and Charvi A, who recorded significant increases in their ratings.
