FIFA Abandons Controversial World Cup Stake Sale Plan
On July 31, FIFA announced the cancellation of its plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors, a proposal that faced strong backlash from UEFA and other football governing bodies.
The initiative, introduced by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, aimed to create a new subsidiary called FIFA Forward Enterprise, which would consolidate FIFA's revenue-generating operations. The plan included offering FIFA's 211 member associations an upfront payment of $20 million, followed by additional payments over the next decade.
UEFA held an emergency meeting and unanimously opposed the proposal, stating that the World Cup should not be treated as an investment product. Other confederations and individual federations also expressed concerns regarding transparency. Following this widespread opposition, Infantino confirmed that the project would not proceed, emphasizing the need for unity within the football community.
