FIFA President Gianni Infantino Abandons World Cup Investment Plan

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has announced the cancellation of his controversial plan to commercialize the World Cup by selling stakes to private investors. This decision comes after significant backlash from key football confederations, including UEFA, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

The proposal aimed to provide FIFA's 211 member associations with $40 million each in exchange for support of private investment in competitions such as the men's and women's World Cups. However, the plan faced immediate rejection from UEFA, which threatened to boycott FIFA events, and Concacaf and AFC also opposed it, leaving Infantino with little chance of gaining necessary support.

Infantino acknowledged that the proposal had caused divisions that contradicted its original purpose. He expressed a desire to unite all parties involved in football moving forward. The withdrawal of the plan comes as Infantino prepares for the upcoming FIFA presidential election in March, where he is expected to seek a fourth term.
