FIFA President Gianni Infantino Faces Criticism Over Leadership Amid Apology
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has issued an apology to the FIFA Council regarding his contentious proposal to sell off World Cup commercial rights, which was quickly abandoned after public backlash. During a lengthy meeting in Zurich, Council members expressed their dissatisfaction with Infantino's lack of transparency and unanswered questions related to the plan.
Debbie Hewitt, chair of the Football Association and FIFA vice-president, emphasized that Infantino's apology was insufficient without the release of relevant documents. She described the meeting as particularly candid but noted that many critical inquiries remained unresolved, including those concerning a red-card ban during the World Cup.
UEFA has been a vocal critic of Infantino since the proposal's revelation, pursuing legal action to obtain documents tied to the abandoned project. Hewitt stated that access to these documents is essential for the Council to assess whether any further actions are warranted regarding Infantino's leadership.
