FIFA President Gianni Infantino Receives $1.72 Million Payment
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has come under scrutiny after receiving an undisclosed payment of $1.72 million from the entity overseeing the 2026 World Cup. This payment, reported in newly released financial documents, was made in 2024 and is separate from Infantino's regular salary and benefits, which amounted to approximately $4.86 million that year.
The additional compensation was not included in FIFA's 2024 annual report, prompting questions about compliance with transparency regulations. FIFA has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that all financial disclosures meet the necessary reporting requirements.
Documents submitted to the United States Internal Revenue Service indicate that Infantino's payment was made by FWC2026, the organization created by FIFA to manage the World Cup held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Despite FIFA's claims of adherence to financial regulations, former FIFA governance committee chairman Miguel Maduro has suggested that the lack of public disclosure of such payments could violate FIFA's rules on transparency.
