Fijian Rugby Player Saimoni Vunilagi Dies from Suspected Heatstroke in Japan

Saimoni Vunilagi, a 26-year-old rugby player from Fiji, has died from suspected heatstroke after a training session with his Japanese club Kyuden Voltex. The club, located in Fukuoka, announced his passing, which occurred on Friday, August 7.

Vunilagi exhibited symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke following practice on August 3 and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, he did not survive. The team expressed deep sorrow over the loss, noting that Vunilagi had only recently joined them and was expected to make significant contributions in the upcoming season.

Kyuden Voltex emphasized the impact of Vunilagi's generous spirit and playing style, while also requesting privacy for his family during this difficult time. Vunilagi had previously played for Tokyo Sungoliath and began his professional career in 2023 after attending university in Japan.
