Finlay O'Neill Prepares for Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup 2026
Finlay O'Neill, a 21-year-old athlete, is gearing up to compete for England in the Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup 2026 in Australia. O'Neill, who made his England debut in 2025, transitioned to wheelchair rugby league after a knee injury at age 16 ended his participation in traditional rugby.
After being diagnosed with shallow kneecaps and hypermobility, O'Neill shifted to wheelchair rugby league with the Halifax Panthers, where he has since excelled. He is now part of a 10-player squad that includes teammates Jack Brown and Rob Hawkins, who previously won the World Cup in 2022. England's campaign begins against Wales, followed by matches against the USA and Ireland.
O'Neill has noted the similarities between wheelchair rugby league and traditional rugby, emphasizing the need for skill in maneuvering the wheelchair while playing. He aims to contribute as a playmaker, leveraging his understanding of the game developed through his previous experience. O'Neill is one of five debutants in the England squad and is determined to help the team secure victory in the tournament.
