First Russian Diesel Shipment to the US Under New Agreement
The first shipment of Russian diesel to the United States is currently on its way, following a recent agreement between Moscow and US President Donald Trump. The tanker, Agioi Fanendes, is expected to arrive in New York on November 7, having loaded 40,000 metric tons of ultra-low sulphur diesel in Primorsk on October 22.
This shipment is significant as it represents the first import of Russian diesel since a ban was imposed by former President Joe Biden in 2022. Trump announced the deal earlier this month, aiming to alleviate rising diesel prices ahead of the upcoming mid-term elections. As part of the agreement, Trump waived certain sanctions against Russia and threatened a US diesel export ban on European countries unless they released more oil from their reserves.
The Kremlin confirmed the departure of the tanker but did not specify its destination. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak indicated that more shipments to the US would follow as contracts are finalized. Russia has resumed its diesel exports globally, primarily to Turkey and Brazil, after lifting its own ban on exports.
