First UK Dissolvable Heart Implant Allows Teen to Pursue Rugby Dreams

A 14-year-old girl from Warrington has made history as the first person in the UK to receive a dissolvable heart implant designed to close a hole in her heart. The procedure, performed at Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust in Liverpool, allows Lillie Yale to pursue her dream of becoming a professional rugby player without the hindrance of a permanent metal device.

The implant, known as Memosorb, serves as a scaffold for Lillie's heart to heal over time and will fully dissolve, leaving no trace. This innovative approach is particularly beneficial for athletes, as traditional metal implants could be dislodged during contact sports. Lillie's mother reported that her daughter is healing well and has resumed activities like running and playing rugby.

Dr. Salim Jivanji, the consultant paediatric cardiologist who oversaw the procedure, explained that the device mimics the body's natural healing process, gradually being absorbed as the heart tissue regenerates. Lillie was diagnosed with an atrial septal defect shortly after her premature birth and had been monitored regularly until her condition required intervention.
