Five MLB Players Choose Minor League Free Agency
Five players who participated in Major League Baseball this season have opted for minor league free agency after being outrighted from their teams' 40-man rosters. This decision is largely a formality as these players have each spent over seven seasons in the minors.
Among them, Bruján was acquired by the Mets from Minnesota but struggled to secure a permanent spot, appearing in only three games with a batting average of .091. Mastrobuoni faced injury setbacks and had limited success in the majors, hitting .192 in 13 games. Vázquez spent most of the season with Triple-A Norfolk, posting a .226 average and briefly appearing in the majors.
Freeman played nearly half of Colorado's games, achieving a .247 batting average with three home runs, but was waived in September due to below-average defensive performance. Melendez, who had a notable season in Triple-A with 22 home runs, struggled in the majors with a .192 average and was designated for assignment by the Mets.
