Flames Recall Castagna and Suniev from Wranglers
The Calgary Flames have announced the recall of Jonathan Castagna and Aydar Suniev from the AHL's Calgary Wranglers. This move was made public on Wednesday, with Castagna possibly on the brink of his NHL debut.
Castagna, 21, was acquired from the Utah Mammoth as part of a previous trade involving MacKenzie Weegar. He had a successful collegiate career at Cornell, leading the team in scoring last season with 15 goals and 19 assists. He also received recognition as a member of the All-ECAC First Team and was named the best defensive forward in the ECAC.
In his early professional career, Castagna scored two goals in his first two games with the Wranglers. Suniev, who was drafted by the Flames in the third round in 2023, has recorded one assist in seven games with the NHL team. The roster changes follow the assignment of Connor Zary and Brayden Pachal to the Wranglers on Tuesday. The Flames are set to face the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday.
