Formula 1 to Revert to Standard Race Distances in 2028
Formula 1 will restore its standard race distance of 305 kilometers in 2028, following a reduction to 290 kilometers for the 2027 season. This change was implemented due to adjustments in engine regulations.
The 2027 rules, recently published by the FIA, included a provision to revert to the original distance. The reduction was made in response to concerns regarding the new hybrid engines, which have a nearly equal split between internal combustion and electric power, potentially diminishing the emphasis on driver skill.
As part of the upcoming changes, the power distribution of the engines will shift to a 60-40 split by 2028, allowing for increased power and fuel consumption. This adjustment raised concerns among teams about the feasibility of completing races with existing fuel tank sizes, particularly in races with higher fuel demands.
