Formula 1 to Shorten Grand Prix Distances in 2027

Formula 1 is set to shorten the maximum distance of all grand prix races from 305km to 290km beginning in 2027. This change is part of a broader adjustment to the balance between electrical and internal-combustion power in the sport.

The decision follows discussions among stakeholders earlier this season, initially suggesting that only a few races would be affected. However, it has now been agreed that all races will be uniformly shortened. Monaco, which has a unique layout, will also see its distance reduced from 260km.

This proposal has received general agreement from teams but still requires ratification by the World Motorsport Council. The adjustments come in response to criticism of the current technical regulations, which have led to an unpopular driving style due to the equal contribution of electrical and internal-combustion power. A shift towards a 60:40 ratio favoring internal combustion is planned for 2028, with an interim ratio of 58:42 for the upcoming season.
