Framber Valdez Faces Challenges in Detroit Debut Season
Framber Valdez's inaugural season with the Detroit Tigers has not gone as planned, as he faced significant challenges on the mound. The left-handed pitcher, who signed a three-year, $115 million contract, recorded a 4.03 ERA, his highest since becoming a full-time starter in 2020.
Valdez's performance included a career-low strikeout rate of 17.8% and an increase in walks, contributing to the Tigers' failure to reach the postseason. His groundball rate also declined to 56.3%, below his career average of 61.5%, leading to more air contact and a higher pulled air rate of 16.4%. This shift resulted in a batting average against of .258 and a slugging percentage of .370.
Despite these setbacks, Valdez's issues are not considered insurmountable. The decline in his curveball's effectiveness and the absence of his typical dominant stretches were notable factors. As the Tigers look ahead to the 2027 season, they will need Valdez to return to his previous form to strengthen their rotation.
