Fred Warner Fined for Hits on Defenseless Player, Malik Mustapha Escapes Penalty
Fred Warner, a linebacker for the 49ers, faced disciplinary action from the NFL following his performance in Week 6, where he was fined for two separate hits on Commanders tight end Chig Okonkwo during a Monday night game.
Warner's fines totaled $65,673, which included $47,762 for hitting a defenseless player and $17,911 for initiating contact with his helmet. Although the hit on the defenseless player was flagged during the game, the penalty was later rescinded by officials.
If Warner incurs two more fines for similar infractions, he risks a one-game suspension. Additionally, he has previously been fined for a hip-drop tackle, which could also lead to suspension if he receives three such penalties this season. In contrast, 49ers safety Malik Mustapha was not fined for a hit on Stefon Diggs, despite expectations of a penalty based on the ESPN broadcast's commentary.
