Funding Cuts Threaten Support Staff at Southport Cancer Centre

The Southport and Formby Cancer Information and Support Centre, which assists around 800 new patients annually, is at risk of losing most of its support staff due to funding cuts affecting its main financial backers.

The centre, established in 2012 to provide emotional and practical support to cancer patients, may see four full-time positions eliminated as the local Primary Care Network faces a £420,000 reduction in funding from NHS England. This funding will instead be allocated directly to GPs to enhance appointment availability.

Staff at the centre, including cancer navigators who guide patients through various challenges, have expressed concern over the impact of these cuts. The Primary Care Network director acknowledged the value of the service but emphasized that the decision was driven by funding constraints. A final decision regarding the funding for the cancer navigators is expected soon.
