Uemura secured his spot in the final by defeating IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Yota Tsuji in the semifinals, while Oiwa advanced after a victory over Callum Newman. Both wrestlers finished the round-robin stage with 12 points, placing second in their respective blocks, and moved on to the knockout stage through tie-breakers.

Neither Uemura nor Oiwa has previously won the G1 Climax. Traditionally, the tournament winner challenges for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom, although the last two champions opted to challenge at King of Pro-Wrestling in October.
