Gael Monfils Announces Retirement from Tennis at Age 38
Gael Monfils, the French tennis player, has officially retired from the sport at the age of 38, marking the end of his 22-year career which included 13 ATP titles. His retirement was confirmed through his listing on the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s Retired Players List.
Monfils had previously announced his intention to retire after the 2026 Paris Masters, aiming to bid farewell to his home fans. However, following his second-round loss at the U.S. Open to Learner Tien in early September, it appears he has played his final match. His retirement date is recorded as October 5.
Despite receiving a wild card for the ATP 250 tournament in Lyon, Monfils withdrew from an exhibition event with fellow French players for personal reasons. He reached a career-high ranking of world No. 6 and plans to transition into finance, having secured a position in wealth management at a Swiss firm.
