Gael Monfils Exits Grand Slam Tennis After US Open Loss
Gael Monfils ended his Grand Slam tennis career with a loss to Learner Tien in the second round of the US Open on Thursday night in New York.
The 40-year-old French player, who plans to retire at the end of the year, was defeated with scores of 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. Tien, at 20 years old, had previously requested Monfils' autograph after their match in Montreal last month.
During his final match, Monfils received a warm farewell from fans at Louis Armstrong Stadium, who chanted his name and gave him a standing ovation. He reflected on his long career and expressed gratitude for the support he received from the crowd. Monfils made history as the oldest man to win a match at the tournament since 1992 and reached the mixed doubles semifinals with his wife, Elina Svitolina. He has accepted a position in wealth management and plans to remain connected to tennis through Svitolina.
