Garrett Whitlock Diagnosed with Fractured Tibia After Season
Garrett Whitlock, a reliever for the Boston Red Sox, has been diagnosed with a fractured right tibia after unknowingly pitching through the injury during the last month of the regular season. His season concluded in late September following a two-game Wild Card series against the Yankees, where he made one appearance.
In that game, Whitlock allowed three earned runs, including a home run, over 1 1/3 innings. Following the series, imaging revealed the fracture, but he will not need surgery. He is expected to wear a walking boot for four to six weeks and should be ready for Spring Training.
Despite the injury, Whitlock performed well in September, not allowing any earned runs in eight appearances. He had a 1.72 ERA for the season and ranked among the top relievers in several statistical categories. The Red Sox are likely to exercise his club option for 2027 as he remains under contract through a four-year extension signed in 2022.
