Garrett Whitlock Diagnosed with Fractured Tibia After Strong Season
Garrett Whitlock, a reliever for the Boston Red Sox, has been diagnosed with a fractured right tibia after completing a successful regular season. He pitched through the injury during September, as reported by Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald.
The Red Sox's season concluded in late September following a two-game Wild Card series against the Yankees, where Whitlock made an appearance in Game 2, allowing three earned runs in 1 1/3 innings. Imaging after the series revealed the fracture, but he will not need surgery. Whitlock is expected to wear a walking boot for four to six weeks but should be ready for Spring Training.
Despite the injury, Whitlock performed well in September, not allowing any earned runs over 7 1/3 innings while striking out nine batters. Earlier in the season, he faced two stints on the injured list due to knee and elbow issues. Whitlock had a standout season, achieving a 1.72 ERA and ranking among the top relievers in several categories. The Red Sox are likely to exercise his $8.25 million club option for 2027.
