Garrett Whitlock Pitched with Fractured Tibia During Playoffs
Garrett Whitlock, a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, unknowingly played through a fractured tibia during the final stretch of the season and into the playoffs.
The injury was misdiagnosed by the team's medical staff and was only identified through imaging after the Red Sox's loss to the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series. Despite experiencing pain for about a month, Whitlock did not receive imaging until after the playoffs.
In his only playoff appearance, Whitlock struggled, although he did not allow an earned run in 7.1 innings pitched during September. The misdiagnosis may raise concerns regarding the Red Sox training staff's practices, especially given previous scrutiny of the front office's methods.
