Gavin McKenna to Miss NHL Prospect Challenge
Gavin McKenna, the first overall pick in the NHL draft, will not join the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 2026 NHL Prospect Challenge in Gatineau, Quebec. This announcement was made by Marlies head coach Steve Sullivan on Friday.
Although McKenna was included in the roster and took part in practice in Toronto, he will not compete in any games during the event. Last season, the 18-year-old player recorded 51 points, including 15 goals and 36 assists, in 35 games at Penn State. He also contributed 14 points, with four goals and 10 assists, in seven games at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship.
McKenna's next opportunity to play for the Maple Leafs will be during their pre-season opener against the Montreal Canadiens on September 19.
