George Kusche: From Data Scientist to Comrades Champion

George Kusche, a 27-year-old data scientist from Pretoria, made headlines by winning the 2026 Comrades Marathon, setting a new record of 5:16:06. This victory followed his impressive debut in 2025, where he finished 12th.

Kusche, who coached himself using data analytics and a training platform he developed, emphasized a balanced approach to training. He typically runs at a relaxed pace, focusing on consistency rather than intense workouts. His journey back to running began after a year off due to health issues, during which he shifted his focus to strength training.

In addition to his running achievements, Kusche has launched a coaching platform called Go Run More, aimed at helping athletes track their training data effectively. He plans to continue competing in the Comrades Marathon and aims to qualify for the Olympics in 2028.
