George Russell Addresses Concerns Over Mercedes F1 Upgrades
George Russell has stated that the concerns regarding the failed upgrades of Mercedes' Formula 1 car are exaggerated and largely dependent on track conditions. This comment comes after the team decided to split their aerodynamic packages ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix, which led to speculation about a desperate response to maintain their championship position.
During a media session at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, Russell explained that the decision to revert to an older aerodynamic specification was not a reaction to a crisis but rather a strategic choice he had advocated for prior to the race. He noted that he had been discussing the potential to abandon the new components even before experiencing a significant engine failure during the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Russell emphasized that the performance issues observed in Malaysia were not indicative of a fundamental flaw in the upgrades, attributing the lack of pace to the specific characteristics of the Sepang track. He pointed out that the car's performance can vary significantly based on circuit layout, and he remains confident that the upgrades will perform well under different conditions.
