George Russell Identifies Missing Front Wing as Key Issue for Mercedes' Upgrade Failure
George Russell has pointed to a missing front wing as the primary reason for the failure of Mercedes' significant aerodynamic upgrade at the 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
Upon arriving at the race, the Mercedes team anticipated that their new upgrade package would enhance their championship position. However, the updates did not perform as expected, prompting team principal Toto Wolff to investigate the discrepancy between the wind tunnel data and actual performance.
To address the issue, Mercedes split their strategy for the ongoing Singapore Grand Prix, with Russell using an older car specification while his teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli tested the full upgrade package. Russell revealed that the aerodynamic package used in Malaysia was incomplete, lacking the front wing that was included for the Singapore race. He suspects that this missing component significantly affected the car's balance and performance in Malaysia.
