Georgia Defeats Alabama Amid Controversial No-Call
In a closely contested matchup, No. 2 Georgia triumphed over No. 6 Alabama with a score of 20-17 on Saturday night, concluding with a contentious no-call that left Alabama's coach Kalen DeBoer visibly upset.
With less than four minutes left in the game, Alabama was in position for a potential game-tying field goal. Quarterback Keelon Russell attempted a deep pass to Rico Scott in the end zone, but Georgia safety KJ Bolden made contact with Scott before the ball arrived, which many believed warranted a pass interference penalty. However, the officials did not throw a flag.
DeBoer expressed his frustration towards the officiating crew, as the lack of a penalty forced Alabama into a challenging third-and-10 situation. Following a sack by Bolden, Alabama was unable to recover, leading to a punt. Despite having timeouts remaining, Alabama could not regain possession, and a subsequent unsportsmanlike conduct penalty sealed their fate. DeBoer later remarked on the need to control the game without relying on officiating decisions.
