German Finance Minister Highlights Geopolitical Uncertainty's Impact on Growth
German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil addressed the impact of geopolitical uncertainty on global economic growth during a G20 meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, on September 1.
Klingbeil stated that factors such as the Iran conflict, U.S. tariff disputes, and competitive distortions from China contribute to global instability. He expressed that these tariff conflicts undermine trust and ultimately harm all involved parties, reducing overall prosperity.
Despite these challenges, Germany's economy demonstrated resilience with a 0.3% growth in the second quarter. Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel noted a potential return of economic momentum in the latter half of the year and emphasized the importance of maintaining fiscal discipline to uphold Germany's AAA credit rating.
