Germany's Service Sector Shows Signs of Recovery in July
Germany's service sector saw a minor contraction in July, with demand showing signs of improvement and new business increasing for the first time in five months, as reported on August 5.
The final HCOB Germany services Purchasing Managers' Index rose to 49.8 in July from 48.6 in June, surpassing an initial estimate of 49.6. A reading below 50 indicates contraction, but the closer it approaches that figure, the slower the contraction rate.
Phil Smith from S&P Global Market Intelligence noted that business conditions have stabilized, with only slight job losses reported for the third consecutive month. New business growth followed four months of decline, marking the first increase in demand since the onset of the Middle East conflict in late February. Although export orders continued to decline, the decrease was marginal. Price pressures increased, with input cost inflation rising from a seven-month low. Smith cautioned that predicting inflation trends remains challenging due to global energy price volatility and uncertainties stemming from the Iran conflict.
