Gianni Infantino Abandons World Cup Stake Sale Plans Amid Backlash

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has decided not to pursue the sale of a stake in future World Cup profits to private equity investors after facing strong opposition from various football governing bodies.

The proposal, which aimed to launch FIFA Forward Enterprise to combine the sale of FIFA's commercial rights with tournament operations, was met with backlash from UEFA, CONCACAF, and the Asian Football Confederation. Infantino had initially set a deadline for football associations to support the plan, offering a £30.1 million incentive.

In a statement, Infantino acknowledged the divisions created by the proposal and emphasized the need for unity within FIFA. The decision comes after significant internal pressure, including the resignation of senior advisor Carlos Cordeiro, who criticized the plan as detrimental to football's future.
