Gianni Infantino Faces Pressure Amid Undeclared Salary Revelation
FIFA president Gianni Infantino is facing increasing pressure to resign following the revelation of an undeclared second salary payment of £1.3m for 2024. This disclosure has intensified scrutiny on his leadership, particularly after his attempts to sell stakes in FIFA tournaments to private investors.
Financial documents indicate that Infantino reported a total salary of £3.88m for 2024, but US tax filings revealed the additional payment from FWC2026, the organization responsible for the upcoming World Cup, which was not included in FIFA's annual report. FIFA has committed to transparency regarding the president's compensation since 2016, as mandated by its statutes.
Despite the controversies, Infantino plans to stand for re-election in March 2027 and believes he retains sufficient support, particularly from federations in Africa and South America. No significant challengers have emerged, although former player Ramon Vega has expressed interest in running. Candidates must declare their intentions by November 18.
