Gianni Infantino Faces Scrutiny at FIFA Council Meeting
FIFA president Gianni Infantino is set to confront questions regarding his previously abandoned initiative to sell stakes in FIFA tournaments at the FIFA Council meeting in Zurich on Thursday morning.
This meeting, scheduled for 10am, marks the first chance for the 36 Council members to directly question Infantino about his secretive plan to privatize parts of the World Cup. Infantino, who is under pressure to resign, aims for re-election in March 2027 despite facing a significant crisis in his presidency.
While Infantino had garnered over 200 letters of support for his re-election earlier this summer, many associations, particularly in Europe, have since retracted their backing following the controversy. He currently appears to have enough support to secure the necessary votes for another term, although Arsene Wenger has been mentioned as a potential challenger, despite his current role within FIFA.
