Gianni Infantino's Re-election as FIFA President Appears Unopposed
Gianni Infantino, who has served as FIFA president since 2016, is likely to be re-elected unopposed in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for March 18, 2024. This comes just over two months after the announcement of his FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal, which aimed to sell World Cup commercial rights to a private equity firm.
Despite initial concerns about his leadership, senior figures in world football now believe that Infantino may not face any challengers. UEFA had hoped to leverage the FFE proposal to remove him but has struggled to find a credible opponent. Victor Montagliani, president of Concacaf, was considered a potential challenger but has opted to seek re-election within his own organization instead.
Infantino has been actively campaigning globally, securing support particularly from African nations, which have pledged their backing. While UEFA continues to seek ways to challenge his presidency, including potential legal actions, it appears increasingly unlikely that Infantino will face a serious electoral threat.
