Giant Tuna Fishing Returns to Yorkshire Waters
A commercial fishing crew recently made headlines after landing a 338kg Atlantic bluefin tuna off the coast of Whitby, the first catch of its kind in the North Sea in approximately 60 years. The following day, they achieved another catch, highlighting the potential return of this species to Yorkshire waters.
The bluefin tuna, known for its size and strength, has not been seen in the region for decades. Its reappearance is believed to be linked to changes in marine ecosystems and warming sea temperatures. Historically, the area was a hotspot for tunny fishing, attracting wealthy anglers in the 1930s who sought the thrill of catching these fish.
As bluefin tuna populations appear to be recovering, researchers from the University of Exeter are studying their movements to inform fishing quotas and ensure sustainability. Current regulations limit the number of licensed fishers to protect this species, which is now valued highly in the culinary market.
