Giants Acquire Philip Abner from Diamondbacks
The San Francisco Giants have claimed left-handed pitcher Philip Abner off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks and have sent him to Triple-A Sacramento.
Abner, who is 24 years old, was designated for assignment by Arizona prior to the claim. In his brief major league career, he has pitched 18 innings with a 6.00 earned run average. However, his minor league performance has been more promising, with a 3.98 ERA over 40 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level, along with a strikeout rate of 26.9%.
To accommodate Abner and fellow lefty Matt Wilkinson, who was also selected, the Giants transferred catcher Daniel Susac and outfielder Harrison Bader to the 60-day injured list. Bader has been sidelined since May due to plantar fasciitis, while Susac is expected to miss the remainder of the season due to a recent patellar fracture.
