Giants Acquire Shay Whitcomb from Astros
The San Francisco Giants have announced the acquisition of infielder Shay Whitcomb, who was claimed off waivers from the Houston Astros and assigned to Triple-A Sacramento. This move follows Houston's decision to designate Whitcomb for assignment earlier in the week.
To accommodate Whitcomb on the 40-man roster, the Giants transferred right-hander Trevor McDonald to the 60-day injured list due to his need for Tommy John surgery, which will keep him out for the remainder of the season. Whitcomb, 27, has struggled in the majors, posting a batting average of .167 over 102 plate appearances in the last three seasons. However, his minor league performance has been more promising, with a .274 average this year in Triple-A, although it is supported by a high batting average on balls in play.
In previous seasons, Whitcomb demonstrated significant potential in Triple-A, achieving a .280 batting average with 50 home runs and 42 stolen bases over 2024 and 2025. The Giants are looking to fill gaps in their infield following trades and injuries, making Whitcomb a strategic addition as they assess his potential for utility roles in the future.
