Giants Replace Jameis Winston with J.J. McCarthy in Loss to Saints
The New York Giants made a significant change during their game against the New Orleans Saints, benching quarterback Jameis Winston in the fourth quarter while trailing 34-10. Head coach John Harbaugh opted for J.J. McCarthy, a former first-round pick from the Vikings, to take over the offense.
Winston had a challenging performance, completing 14 of 26 passes for 152 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, contributing to the team's struggles against a Saints defense that had been allowing an average of 30.2 points per game. In contrast, McCarthy quickly energized the team, leading three consecutive scoring drives and finishing the quarter with 243 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception, along with 25 rushing yards.
McCarthy's standout moment came with a 24-yard touchdown pass to tight end Isaiah Likely. Despite his early interception, McCarthy's performance offered a glimpse of hope for a Giants offense searching for stability at the quarterback position, especially after Jaxson Dart was sidelined for the season due to injury. While Winston had performed adequately since taking over for Dart, his off day prompted Harbaugh to evaluate McCarthy's potential for the future.
