Giants Set to Promote Pitching Prospect Matt Wilkinson
The San Francisco Giants are preparing to promote pitching prospect Matt Wilkinson for his major league debut, as reported by ESPN's Jeff Passan. Wilkinson, who is not currently on the 40-man roster, will have his contract selected from Triple-A Sacramento.
At 23 years old, Wilkinson was drafted in the 10th round by the Guardians in 2023 and later traded to the Giants along with a Competitive Balance draft pick. With the Giants' 40-man roster full, they have several players on the 60-day injured list, allowing for this promotion.
Wilkinson has performed well in the minors, achieving a combined 3.40 ERA and a 27.2% strikeout rate over 20 starts. Although he faced challenges in two of his Triple-A outings, he recently delivered an impressive performance, pitching seven shutout innings with nine strikeouts. He is regarded as a potential back-of-the-rotation starter with solid command and a variety of pitches.
