Giants Sign Andrew Knizner, Designate Eddys Leonard for Assignment
The San Francisco Giants have officially signed catcher Andrew Knizner, who will replace Zach Morgan on the active roster after Morgan was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento. The team also reinstated outfielder Victor Bericoto from the injured list and designated infielder/outfielder Eddys Leonard for assignment.
The Giants' catching situation has seen significant changes this season, with Patrick Bailey traded to the Guardians in May and rookies Daniel Susac, Jesús Rodríguez, and Drew Cavanaugh receiving playing time. Rodríguez was placed on the injured list due to right elbow neuritis, and Susac was recently sidelined with a patellar fracture, prompting the promotion of Morgan.
Knizner recently opted out of a minor league deal with the Red Sox, where he had a successful season in the minors, posting a .294 batting average with a .393 on-base percentage and a .552 slugging percentage across 234 plate appearances. While his major league performance has been less impressive, he has shown improvement defensively in recent seasons, potentially making him a valuable addition for the Giants.
