Giro di Lombardia Start Delayed by Rider Protest Over Safety
The Giro di Lombardia experienced a five-minute delay at the start due to a protest by riders addressing safety issues in cycling. The event took place in Bergamo, Italy, where the peloton remained stationary despite the countdown and starting flag being waved, causing confusion among spectators.
Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel spoke to the crowd, emphasizing the need for better safety following recent incidents, including the tragic death of British cyclist Fin Tarling in a collision during the Volta a Portugal. The protest was organized by the CPA union, which represents professional cyclists, and highlighted multiple recent incidents involving vehicles on race courses.
The CPA has urged the UCI to ensure that race organizers take responsibility for safety standards. The Giro di Lombardia is the final Monument race of the season and the penultimate event on the UCI World Tour calendar.
